New Interested Member Information

New members can join Cub Scouts at any time of the year. The Cub Scout program is normally a family friendly organization open to boys and girls in grades K through 5, but under the current Covid guidelines, only necessary persons should attend meetings.

New interested members are welcome to attend any of our den meetings at Cork Methodist Church, 4815 W Sam Allen Road, Plant City. We have den meetings every Monday that school is in session, plus a few. (see calendar; we have den meetings on Mondays unless we indicate “No Den Meetings”)

To officially register a boy, a parent/guardian will need to complete and sign a BSA Youth Application (we have blank copies, or a copy is available under “Links” on left side). The BSA Registration fee is $66/calendar year (prorated at $5.50 per month),  plus a one time $25 new member fee.  A book will cost $17, and the pack would like to receive $30 per year ($15 for signups from July thru November) to pay for awards and activities. (We will accept cash, checks, or Paypal transfers; we do not do plastic money.)  Registration may also be completed online, and payment made by credit card, at the web site: beascout.org.  Select “Cub Scouts”, and  (for pack 734) zip code 33565, and follow the guidelines.

To meet with us, you can attend one of our den meetings on most Monday evenings (when school is in session) 6:30PM at Cork Methodist Church (4815 W. Sam Allen Rd, just west of Cork Road), or email us, or phone (contact information at end of post).

The BSA Cub Scout program is for boys and girls in grades K (starting kindergarten for Lion program) through 5, or up to 11 years old, with appropriate programs tailored for the different age levels. A youth who is 11 years old, or completed 5th grade, can become a Boy Scout. Girls in Cub Scouts must be in a separate den from the boys, and have a registered female leader. Cub Scouting is very much a family oriented program, and will require help from parents to put on a quality program.

There is no boundary line for which unit a boy can join. Pack 734 generally draws from the northern Plant City area, the Cork, Knights, and Bailey elementary school areas, but we have students from Springhead, Walden Lake, and other Hillsborough and Polk County public and private schools, and home-schooled youth, in our unit. You can see units in any area, and get additional information about Scouting, at http://beascout.org. If Monday nights are not a convenient meeting time, Cub Scout Pack 744 meets on Tuesday evenings at First United Methodist Church of Plant City.

Cost: (If funds are tight, we can work with you.)
BSA national registration is $66/year, prorated at $5.50/month left in calendar year. (September signup = $22.00).  There is also a one time $25 new member fee.  This will increase to $72/year for 2022, and our council will implement a $33/year activity fee.
A Cub Scout Book (for grades 1 through 5) costs $17. The Lion book for Kindergarten age youth is $10.
Pack 734 requests a $30 activity fee each year ($15 for July thru November signups) to help cover costs of badges, awards, etc.
This is all that is initially required to get started. Additionally:
A den may request dues to pay for materials used in their program.
The optional Boy’s Life Magazine costs $12/year, prorated ($1/months left in year).
A Pack 734 T-shirt costs $9.
The Cub Uniform (Shirt, council patch, unit number, scarf, slide, belt) will cost about $60. An experienced uniform is often available for less money.
Most district or council activities will have an additional activity fee, which we will pass along to participants.

We encourage all parents, and will require all leaders, to take the Youth Protection on-line training, and other training, available at http://my.scouting.org.
